A home design studio with a garage underneath uses concrete to express its unusual form and animated façade.
The building is located at the edge of a site that has a significant drop off. The garage below is accessed from the street, while the studio is accessed via a cantilevered walkway from the house’s gardens above. Built entirely of concrete, the structure gives a whimsical nod to the work of Louis Kahn and uses the construction process to create its unique exterior. To achieve the scale effect, the two-by-eight-foot panels that were used for the concrete forms were carefully overlapped to push the concrete into a rhythmic pattern. The holes from the snap ties that held the forms together were then left also exposed to add further visual detail.
