To convert a central Austin condo into a live/work environment for a painter and a writer required creative solutions to maximize the small space.
The project involved a major interior renovation and some structural and aesthetic improvements to the exterior. The original living room was adapted to become the painter’s studio, converting the dining room to a small parlor. The kitchen and dining room were reconfigured to add storage. Among the most striking and challenging features of the project is an adaptation of an Asian step chest design that is integrated into the structure of the staircase. Upstairs houses the writing office, the master suite and a guest room. Materials and detailing were important to the project; every space is assigned one or more specific functions and the close quarters demand the best craftsmanship both for aesthetics and durability.
